We all know that natural tanning damages and ages skin. In addition, as we get older, our skin loses moisture, and many self-tanners tend to dry out your skin further. I look for self-tanners that moisturize while providing the most natural color, easy application, no smell or a good smell, and deliver a long lasting tan. I have tried many self-tanners, and some are definitely better than others. Here’s the lowdown on 8 self-tanners for mature skin in a variety of price ranges.
1.Tan-Luxe Hydra Mousse is a unique self-tanner in that it is clear, which can be both a pro and a con as you don’t have a built-in bronzer to use as a guide during application. It’s lightweight and hydrating including: raspberry seed oil, vitamin E acetate, hydrolyzed silk, and lecithin. The color does not transfer to clothing and bedding, and the final color is a dark golden looking tan which lasts approximately one week. Personally, I found this product to be a little too dark and orangey on my skin. The product does take some time to dry, but it has a fresh scent during application and dry time. Available in two shades. Cruelty free. Price on Amazon: $48/ 6.76 oz.
2. Bondi-Sands Self-Tanning Foam is an Australian inspired self-tanning mousse that comes in four different shades, ranging from fair to dark. I like the light/medium for my very fair skin. The final color is a natural tan, not streaky or orangey; it provides a streak-free, natural-looking result. This product contains mature skin essentials like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and vitamin E. The product is vegan, cruelty free and doesn’t contain fragrances, dyes, or sulfates. It also includes aloe and has green undertones, which prevents an orange undertone from developing. For me, this is a plus as I have had many cheetoh-looking fake tans. My tan didn’t transfer to clothing or sheets, and it wore off fairly evenly in about five days. This is actually my go-to self-tanner because of the color tone. Price on Amazon: $24.00/6.76 oz.
3. Tanceuticals CC Self-Tanning Body Lotion comes in the form of a light beige lotion, which is easy to apply and keep track of where you’ve applied the product. Despite the tint, it doesn’t transfer to clothing after it dries and smells like coconut when first applying, which is refreshing for a self-tanner. It contains beneficial ingredients for your skin including aloe vera, vitamin E, and argan oil for moisture. The tan is not streaky and lasts for about 7 days. It does get somewhat splotchy when wearing off. Like all self-tanners, make sure you wash your hands after applying to avoid tanned palms. The color developed into a deep bronze tone, which was natural looking. I like the feel of this product; it really made my skin feel hydrated. Price on Amazon: $26.96/ 4.2 oz.

4. Beauty by Earth Self Tanner consists of organic ingredients, and its results are on par with other sunless tanning lotions. The creamy lotion includes shea butter and coconut oil to bring moisture back to your skin. What I like about this product is that the color is buildable. After several applications, you are left with a deep bronze color. The ingredients include: coconut oil, witch hazel, shea butter, and pomegranate extract that hydrate your skin. I also like that this self-tanner comes in three shades: light/medium, medium/dark, and extra dark. Price on Amazon: $27.99/7.5 oz.
5. Skin Drop Natural Self Tanner contains some amazing ingredients for moisture and improving skin texture including: grape seed oil, shea butter, squalane, snow algae extract and vitamin E. It goes on evenly and darkens to a natural tone of color—not at all orangey. It has a light fragrance that is not offensive, unlike many other self-tanners. The product is not overly greasy, dries quickly and doesn’t transfer to clothing or bed sheets. It’s vegan, gluten-free, paraben-free, and has no artificial colors. Price on skindrop.com: $24.95/ 5.0 oz.

6. Jergen’s Natural Glow Firming Daily Moisturizer self-tanner is a gradual tanner, so you can control how dark you wish to be. This is great for beginners or those who may not want a drastic deep, dark tan. The color is natural looking and does not streak. In addition, it contains collagen, elastin, and green tea infusions that are supposed to help with the appearance of cellulite. The product also contains antioxidants and coconut water to moisturize and hydrate your skin. It does have a light scent, but it’s not unpleasant. This is a great option for those who want a light tan. It takes several applications and, for me, days to achieve the tan I wanted. Price on Amazon: $10.47/ 7.5 oz.
7. St. Tropez Self-Tan Express Bronzing Mousse also allows you to choose how dark you want to be, though for this product, it’s in leaving the mousse on for a longer period of time to develop. Allow to develop, one to three hours for a light tan and longer for a deeper tan. The smell is pretty light with this self- tanner, and the color turns more of a bronzy shade as opposed to a brown shade. It contains jojoba and vitamin E to nourish your skin. The mousse has a smooth and lightweight texture, making it easy to spread evenly across your skin. It doesn't leave any streaks or patches after application and lasts about 5 days. Price on Amazon: $46.00/ 6.7 oz.
8.L’Oeal Paris Sublime Bronze Tinted Self-Tanning Lotion: Medium. I tried the medium version of this self-tanner, and it works well with my fair skin. I also like that it’s tinted with a little bit of shimmer when first applying. This, of course, washes off when you shower after your tan has developed. Like most self-tanners, proper application is the key to avoiding streakiness. This product does have a bit of “self-tanner” smell upon application and the color leans a little more toward an orange bronze. It contains itamin E and an alpha hydroxyl acid (AHA) derivative. With this product, my tan lasted about 5 days before starting to wear off. Price on Amazon: $8.79/5 oz.
